Match 42: Afghanistan vs West Indies - ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Post Match Summary

The match 42 of the ICC Men’s WC was happened between Afghanistan and West Indies on July 4th, 2019, at Headingley Cricket Ground, Leeds, England by 10:30 am the local time. The toss was won by the West Indies Captain Jason Holder and elected to bat 1st.

First Innings :

After the dismissal of Evin Lewis, it was Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer built 65 runs partnership off 60 balls as Hetmyer gave his wicket for 39 off 31 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes included. The wicket-keeper batsman Shai Hope contributed 77 runs off 92 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes included. Shai Hope by this registered his 3rd WC half-century and 13th in ODIs. Then came Nicholas Pooran who had an excellent WC campaign for West Indies marked his 2nd fifty in both WC and in ODIs built a steady 107 runs partnership with his skipper Jason Holder who went 5 short of his 10th ODI fifty. Though their spin twins Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman were the only top economical bowlers who gave 5.20 each could not pick any wicket as West Indians were so keen and careful towards their bowling attack.
It was the expensive medium-pacer Dawlat Zadran picked 2 wickets. The debutant Sayed Shirzad and Afghanistan’s most experienced campaigners Mohammad Nabi picket 1 wicket each. Thus West Indies finally made 311 for the loss of 6 wickets in their complete 50 overs.

Second Innings :

When Afghans who began to chase and seek to win at least one match in their 2019 WC tour started their chase with Captain Gulbadin Naib and Rahmat Shah. It was the Afghan skipper Gulbadin Naib departed very early for 5 runs off 6 balls with the only boundary included. Then came Afghanistan’s new wicket-keeper batsman Ikram Ali Khan who was partnered with Rahmat Shah as they built a healthy 2nd wicket partnership for 133 runs off 149 balls which is Afghanistan’s highest partnership in World Cups. It was Rahmat who departed after registering his maiden WC half-century and 15th in ODIs. Then came the Left-Hand batsman Najibullah Zadran who got accompanied with Ikram Ali Khan as they made a steady fifty (51 runs) partnership for the 3rd wicket. Ikram Ali the new Afghan wicket-keeper batsman who made his maiden half-century in both World Cups and ODIs departed for a well made 86 runs off 93 balls with 8 fours included. It was Chris Gayle who made the breakthrough as Ikram Ali was given Leg-Before-Wicket (LBW). It was their one among the senior batsman Asghar Afghan who tried to chase the target in the end but, he was not supported by any other Afghanistan middle or lower order batsmen. It was the Windies pacemaker Carlos Brathwaite who picked his 1st 4 wicket-haul followed by Kemar Roach who picked a 3-wicket haul as he gave 37 runs in 10 overs spell with 2 maidens included. It was the “Universe Boss” Chris Gayle who bowled his farewell WC spell of 6 overs conceding just 28 runs at an economy of 4.67 which is the 2nd best in the West Indian bowling department next to Kemar Roach as the big man picked the crucial wicket of the dangerous Ikram Ali Khan. It was left-arm paceman Oshane Thomas picket the Afghans last wicket in the final ball of the innings. Thus the Afghans could only make 288 runs for the loss of all the 10 wickets in their complete 50 overs.



Man of the Match(MOM): It was Shai Hope from the winning team grabbed the Man of the Match award for his crucial 77 runs.

Records: Evin Lewis registered his 2nd WC fifty and 5th overall in ODIs.

The West Indian wicket-keeper batsman Shai Hope marked his 3rd WC half-century and 13th overall in ODIs.

Nicholas Pooran reached his 2nd fifty in both World Cups and in ODIs.

Rahmat Shah the Afghanistan opening batsman registered his maiden WC fifty despite off his 15 fifties in ODIs.

The Afghan wicket-keeper batsman Ikram Ali Khan also registered his maiden WC half-century.

It was Rahmat Shah and Ikram Ali Khan built a record-breaking partnership for the Afghans for their 2nd wicket as they both put on 133 runs off 149 balls.

This is the 1st-time West Indian medium-pace bowler Carlos Brathwaite achieved his 1st 4 wicket-haul in a World Cup match.
