Yes obviously they can’t make to Semifinals but, they are still a threatening team! The match 39 of the ICC Men’s WC was happened between Sri Lanka and West Indies on July 1st 2019, at Riverside Ground, Chester—Street, England by 10:30 am the local time. It’s the West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and elected to field 1st.
First Innings :
It was the Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunratne and their wicket-keeper batsman Kusal Perera started the Sri Lankan batting line-up, as the opening pair put on a 93 runs partnership for the 1st wicket. It was Kusal Mendis who came at no.4 and made a steady partnership with Avishka Fernando as the pair put on 85 runs off 84 balls which is 2nd highest partnership of the innings. Kusal Mendis who was dismissed for 39 off 41 runs with 4 boundaries under his belt. It was then the experienced Angelo Mathews who came in the middle. Mathews who sounded good with the bat again this time failed to convert into big runs as he departed for 26 off 20 with 2 four and 1 six included. Finally, it was Lahiru Thirumanne who supported for the 21 year young Avishka Fernando which brought up Avishka’s 1st ever ODI century and obviously this is his 1st World Cup Ton as he made 104 runs off 103 with 9 boundaries and 2 sixes included.
Lahiru Thirumanne who was so supportive with the bat contributed 45 off 33 balls with 4 fours included. It was the West Indian pace maker Sheldon Cottrell who picked 2 wickets along with Jason Holder, Crarlos Brathwaite and Shannon Gabriel picked 1 wicket each. Thus Sri Lanka indeed made 338 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 50 overs.
Second Innings :
It was Chris Gayle and Sunil Ambrose who began to chase the target of 339 runs but, it was Ambrose who departed so early for 5 off 6 balls with only 1 four included as Lasith Malinga bowled a brilliant delivery which was caught behind by the Lankan wicket-keeper Kusal Perera and then it was the West Indies most trusted batsman Shai Hope who departed for 5 off 11 balls. As Chris Gayle who departed for 45 off 48 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes under his belt along with Shimron Hetmyer who supported a decent run by 29 off 38 balls with 2 boundaries included departed when West Indies at 84 for 4 in 17.5 overs. Then came the 23 year old game changer Nicholas Pooran who stood up with his captain Jason Holder, as the pair put on 61 runs for the 5th wicket. After the Captain’s helpful knock of 26 off 26 with 4 boundaries included it was Carlos Brathwaite who came in the middle to finish the match with Pooran at one end but, Brathwaite disappointed for 8 runs. It was most surprisingly Fabian Allen who desperately supported for the team along with the young Nicholas Pooran. The pair made a scary partnership of 81 runs for the 7th wicket as Fabian Allen was run out for 51 runs off just 32 runs with 7 fours and 1 six included. After Fabian it was the West Indian lime light Nicholas Pooran who departed after scoring his 1st ever ODI century and also this is his 1st in World Cup as he made 118 off 103 balls with 11 fours and 4 sixes. This made the Sri Lankans to come back in the game. It was their senior and well experienced pacemaker Lasith Malinga who picked a 3 wicket-haul for 55 runs and it was a brave decision taken by the Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne to bring Angelo Mathews for the 48th over. Strange part is what Mathews did not bowl a single over since 2017. But, the captain Karunaratne’s decision did not go wrong as Mathews picked the wicket in the very 1st over he picked the dangerous Nicholas Pooran who was caught behind by Kusal Perera. Thus West Indies could only make 315 for loss of 9 wicket in their full 50 overs as Sri Lankan defend their highest total of the tournament.
Man of the Match(MOM): It was the Sri Lankan youngster Avishka Fernando grabbed the Man of the match award.
