Match 3: New Zealand vs Sri Lanka - ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Post Match Summary

The 3rd ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup was happened between Srilankans and the World 2105 runners New Zealand at Cardiff on June 1, 2019. The New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson had won the toss and were asked the Srilankans to bat 1st at Cardiff, Wales.

It was totally a one-sided match!

As expected Lahiru Thirumanne and the new World Cup Captain Dimuth Karunaratne who opened the 1st innings of the match. The very 2nd ball Thirumanne was gone with a Leg Before Wicket (LBW) where which the review retained by the New Zealand skipper in the early of the innings bolwed by the pacer Matt Henry. Then came the wicket-keeper batsman Kusal Perara who made a quick 29 off 24 which includes 4 classic boundaries but, fail to middle the ball and gave in the hands of de Grandhomme who was in the mid-off. At one side the skipper was batting to bring a good score to the team but, he was not supported by any Srilankan batsmen on the other side which excludes the all-rounder Thisara Perera’s useful 27 off 23. Infact, no other Srilankan batsmen made double digit which was a shame for the 1996 World Cup winners.
There was nothing to blame the Srilankan batsmen it was actually the New Zealand pace men who stole and purely dominated the match. The grassy wicket supported the black cap pace men. Matt Henry who is the reason for destruction dismissed all the 3 toporders. Not only Henry picket 3 it was also Ferguson who picked 3 along with Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, James Neesham and Mitchell Santer who each contributed a wicket for the team. The skipper Dimuth Karunaratne’ s unbeaten half-century brought the Lankan team to reach at least this poor score of 136 for the loss of all the 10 wickets in the 30th over.

When the black caps were in a hunger to chase this least target, the openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro made it so simple to bring their 1st win of the tournament. The most experienced and expected Lasith Malinga was the most expensive among their bowlers. Guptill registered his 35th fifty and Munro marked his 8th. Nothing clicked with the ball for Lankans. This made the New Zealanders to finish the match in just 16.1 overs.
