Match 28: India vs Afghanistan - ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Post Match Summary

The Match 28 of the ICC Men's WC was happened between India and Afghanistan at Ageas Bowl, Southampton, England on June 22nd 2019 by 10:30 am the local time.

The toss was won by the Indian captain Virat Kohli and elected to bat 1st.

First Innings :

It was KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma who opened the innings but Rohit could not carry his form in this mach as he went for just 1 run off 10 balls bowled by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Then came the skipper Virat who partnered with Lokesh Rahul. As the 2nd wicket pair put up a partnership of 57 runs Rahul departed for 30 runs of steady 53 balls with 2 boundaries included. After Rahul it was Vijay Shankar who found an opportunity to bat but was not that impressive as Virat Kohli and Vijay built a 58 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket. After Vijay Shankar who went from the middle for 29 runs off 41 deliveries with 2 fours included then came the "Captain cool" MS Dhoni who built a slow innnigs of 28 off 52 balls with 3 fours included. The skipper Virat who registered his 4 consecutive fifty made an most important contribution for the team by scoring 67 off 63 balls with 5 fours included. Apart from Virat who contributed so well with the bat despite of others batting performance it was Kedhar Jadhav who finally supported the Indian innigs to bring a decent total. Kedhar by this registered his maiden WC fifty as be made 532 off 68 balls with 3 fours and a six included.
The Afghanistan bowlers who performed so well in this match except, Aftab Alam who was high in his economy though he picked one, it was Mujeeb Ur Rahman who made an exceptional spell for his 10 over 26 for 1 followed by the Afghan captain Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Nabi who picked 2 wickets each, along with Rashid who made an impressive come back of picking 1 wicket with Rahmat Shah who also picked 1. Thus the Afghanistan bowlers restricted team India to 224 runs for the loss 8 wickets in the full 50 overs.

Second  Innings :

Though it was a chasable target of 225 but, the Afghan had already made a tie in their previous clash in the Asia Cup. The Indian bowlers did not allow to settle any Afghan batsmen expect 3 batsmen. It is the captain Gulbadin Naib who made a comfortable 27 runs off 42 balls with 2 fours included as an opener. After the 1st wicket had taken place it was Rahmat Shah who made 36 off 63 with 3 fours included. The 3rd batsmen who almost brought the game to Afghan side who is none other than Mohammad Nabi who made his 1st fifty of this WC. As he made 52 off 55 balls with 4 fours and 1 six included. Though Hashmatullah Shahidi who made 21 off 45 with 2 fours, Najibullah Zadran who also made 21 off 23 balls with 2 fours but the Afghanistan fail to reach the target who fell short of 11 runs. The Indian bowlers who supported whenever the team needed it was Mohammad Shami who was the star of the match as he picked his best 4 wicket-haul and 1st hat trick wicket in WC. Not only Shami it was Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal who brought some crucial break troughs as they picked 2 wickets each along Hardik Pandya who picked 2. Thus the Afghanistan were bowled out for 213 runs in 49.5 overs.



Man of the Match (MOM): Though Shami took hattrick it was Jasprit Bumrah who deserve the Man of the Match award as he picked 2 crucial break throughs has controlled at an economy of 3.9 with a maiden over in his 10 overs spell. Bumrah picked top order Rahmat Shah and middle order Hashmatullah Shahidi which was the most important turning point of Afghanistan's batting.

Records: Mohammad Shami became the 2nd Indian to take a hat trick wicket in World Cups. He also became the 1st player to take a hat-trick in this tournament and this is WC career best spell.

Virat Kohli registered his 52nd ODI fifty.

Shami took 7th 4 wicket-haul in One-Day International.
