Match 27: England vs Sri Lanka - ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Post Match Summary

What a match it turned out to be! It was Lasith Malinga who was the victor and turned match despite off Ben Stokes unbeaten fighting innings.

The match 27 of the ICC Men's WC was happened between the host England and Sri Lanka on June 21, 2019, at Headingley Cricket Ground, Leeds, England by 10:30 am the local time.

The toss was won by the Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne and elected to bat 1st.

First Innings :

After the dismissal of Fernando who just missed his maiden fifty in his 1st WC appearance then, came the Lankan's most experienced batsman Angelo Mathews who did not had a perfect game in this tournament. As all the mouths were shut with his knock of 85 runs.
The 71 runs partnership for the 4th wicket and 57 runs partnership with Dhananjaya de Silva brought the Sri Lankan team for a comfortable average score of 232 in their complete 50 overs. AngeloMathews who registered his 38th ODI fifty was unbeaten on 85 off 115 balls with 5 boundaries and a six under his belt. Yes! the English bowlers supported their team to restrict the Lankans not to settle a lot as England's new find Jofra Archer and Mark Wood picked 3 wicket-hauls while, Adhil Rashid picked 2 and Chris Woakes picked 1. Thus Sri Lanka made 232 for the loss of 9 wickets in 50 overs.

Second Innings :

Then came the English side who began to chase this easy target of 233 runs. But, Lasith Malinga who destructed their high attitude by plumbing the stumps for the 1st wicket as the dangerous Jonny Bairstow went for a golden duck. It was James Vince who was next to go gave in the hands of Kusal Mendis in the 1st slip at 14 with 2 boundaries included. This made team England to struggle a bid for the 2nd time in this tournament. England at the end of 10 overs made just 38 for 2 which was their 2nd lowest total after 10 overs since 2015 WC. The skipper Eoin Morgan who partenered for 47 runs with Joe Root gave up his wicket for a caught and bowled to Isuru Udana for 21 runs off 35 balls with 2 boundaries included. It was Joe Root who partnered 54 runs with Ben Stokes went from the middle after losing the review for 57 off 89 odd balls. It was Lasith Malinga who was again brought back for his 2nd spell destructed the break through as Malinga's pace went wide which was nicked by Root and caught behind by Perera. That moment of Joe Root's wicket was the crucial point of the match. Malinga struck once again by not allowing the match winner of team England's wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler for 10 runs off 9 balls. Malinga by this registered his 11th 4 wicket-haul. It was a one man show by the all-rounder Ben Stokes in England batting line-up as he could only make 82 off 89 balls with 7 fours and 4 massive sixes included. No other batsmen in England batting line-up helped for the chase with Ben Stokes in the end. It was Lasith Malinga who stole the show by picking 4 wickets while, Dhananjaya de Silva picked 3 wicket-haul and Isuru Udana picked 2. Nuwan Pradeep who was best in his economy of 3.8 in 10 overs picked 1 wicket and a maiden over. Thus Sri Lanka clinched their 2nd win of this tournament out of 6 which brought them in 5th position in the table. Thus, Team England could only make 212 runs by losing all the 10 wickets in 47 overs.



Man of the Match (MOM): It was Sri Lankan's senior player Lasith Malinga who grabbed the Man of the Match award for his 4 wicket-haul for 43 in his 10 overs.

Records: Lasith Malinga became the 4th bolwer to pick 50 wickets in World Cups.

Joe Root passed his fifty for the 5th time n this WC 2019.

Lasith Malinga reached made his 11th 4 wicket-haul ODIs.
